Luggage Size Guide
Choose the right scale of travel.
A useful suitcase starts with an honest look at trip length, packing habits, and the rules that apply to your journey. This guide explains common size categories and how to compare a case before checkout.

01 / QUICK REFERENCE
Common suitcase categories
| Category | Typical height | Best starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Carry-on | Approximately 20–22 in | Short trips and lighter packing, subject to airline limits. |
| Medium checked | Approximately 24–26 in | Longer stays, additional footwear, or bulkier clothing. |
| Large checked | Approximately 27–30 in | Extended trips or higher packing volume, subject to weight limits. |
| Luggage set | Multiple sizes | Flexible combinations for travelers with different trip needs. |
These are general shopping categories, not universal airline allowances. Always compare external dimensions, including wheels and handles, with your carrier’s current rules.
02 / THE EDIT
Three measurements to check
Measurements are most helpful when they reflect the case in the same condition you will travel with.
Overall height
Include wheels and fixed handles, not just the body of the case. Airlines may count these in their size restrictions.
Width and depth
Verify all external dimensions, especially on expandable luggage that may exceed a carrier limit when opened.
Packed weight
The weight of the empty suitcase is only the beginning. Allow for contents and any airline weight allowance.
03 / CLOSER LOOK
Think in packing volume
A hard shell and a soft side of similar outer dimensions can feel different inside because of lining, framing, wheel housings, and pockets. Organization, not just overall size, affects how easy a suitcase is to use.
Consider whether you prefer separate compartments, compressible clothing space, internal dividers, or exterior access. The best size is the one that holds what you need without encouraging unnecessary overpacking.
- Lay out a realistic packing list first
- Measure bulky shoes and outerwear
- Allow space for return-trip items

04 / HOW IT WORKS
Measure before you buy
-
01
Set the suitcase upright
Measure from the floor to the highest point, including wheels and handles.
-
02
Check the widest points
Include protrusions such as side handles or rigid features when measuring width and depth.
-
03
Compare the airline allowance
Check the specific carrier, flight, and fare category. Restrictions can differ by route and ticket.
-
04
Consider personal comfort
Think about stairs, transit connections, storage at home, and the weight you are comfortable maneuvering.
